Union Urban Development Minister Mr. Venkaiah Naidu on
September 20, 2016 released the third list of Smart Cities that will get funding for initiating urban reforms. The list includes names of 27 new cities. With this, the number of cities selected under Smart City Mission
for financing implementation of smart city
plans has gone up to 60. The 27 smart cities announced are
from 12 States, including 5 from Maharashtra, 4 each from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, 3 from Uttar Pradesh and 2 each
from Punjab and
Rajasthan. Nagaland and Sikkim have made it to the smart city list for the first time. List of the 27
cities includes : Amritsar, Jalandhar (Punjab); Kalyan-Dombivili, Nagpur, Thane, Nashik, Aurangabad
(Maharashtra); Ujjain, Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh); Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh); Mangaluru, Tumakuru, Shivamogga, HubbaliDharwad (Karnataka); Agra,
Kanpur, Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh); Rourkela (Odisha); Vellore, Madurai, Thanjavur, Salem (Tamil Nadu); Kota, Ajmer (Rajasthan); Vadodara (Gujarat);
Kohima (Nagaland); and Namchi (Sikkim). PM Mr. Narendra Modi had announced his vision to set up 100 smart cities across the country in 2014. The mission intends to promote adoption of smart solutions for efficient use of available assets, resources and infrastructure. From providing a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment to robust IT connectivity, or e-governance, a smart city will be equipped with these amenities provided through smart solutions.
